Reflect, Reassess, and Renew: Enter the New Year with Purpose
As the new year begins, my husband and I have a tradition that I look forward to every year: we sit down together to reflect on the past year. It’s a chance to slow down and look at all that has happened—personally, as a family, professionally, and spiritually. It’s a time to acknowledge God’s faithfulness, celebrate our growth, and evaluate the areas where we can do better. This little meeting has become one of the most life-giving habits we’ve developed.
Reflecting on the year is such a meaningful exercise. We talk through the things that went well, the moments that brought joy, and the ways we’ve seen God’s hand guiding us. But we also take time to acknowledge the challenges—the things that didn’t go as planned, the mistakes we made, and the lessons we’ve learned. It’s not always easy to face those moments, but it’s always rewarding. I’ve found that reflection helps me see how God can redeem even the difficult seasons.
After we’ve talked it through, my favorite part comes: we take a deep breath and surrender the coming year to God. It’s a quiet moment of release, where we hand over everything we can’t control and trust Him with what’s ahead. From that place of peace, we begin to set goals for the new year—not out of pressure, but with a sense of intention. It’s a challenge to think about how we can grow and show up better in the year ahead.
Besides goal setting, Mark and I choose a word that we feel the Lord has laid on our hearts for the year. Throughout the year, we shift our perspective to see life through that word and use it as a call to action for how we move through each day.
If you don’t already have a habit like this, I encourage you to create one. Take some time to reflect on the highs and lows of your year. Write down the things you’re grateful for, the hard moments that shaped you, and the joys that made you glad. Then, set some goals for the new year—goals that will help you grow in your relationships, in your work, and in your walk with God. If you can, share your reflections and goals with a spouse, a close friend, or a trusted mentor. It’s a great way to build accountability and encouragement.
As we enter 2025, I’m filled with hope and excitement for what’s to come. I pray that you, too, feel renewed and ready to embrace the new year with purpose.
