A Fresh Take on Paint Finishes

When it comes to transforming a space, the right paint color can set the tone for an entire room. For my porch, I’ve chosen White Dove by Benjamin Moore for the trim and doors, paired with Winter Wheat in matte for the brick walls. These two colors work harmoniously together, creating a balanced, inviting atmosphere. But beyond the color itself, the paint finish plays a pivotal role in how a space looks and feels.

White Dove on Trim and Doors

The choice of White Dove (a soft, warm white) for the trim and doors is a timeless decision. This shade offers a clean feel, which was important to me in this busier space. The pearl finish adds a subtle sheen, which helps catch light and adds depth without feeling too glossy or overpowering. It's just the right balance of elegant and understated.

When it came to the brick wall, I opted for Winter Wheat, a soft, earthy hue that brings warmth and texture into the space. Matte finishes, in particular, work well on surfaces like brick because they absorb light, creating a more subdued, elegant look while enhancing the architectural detail.

Rooms with abundant natural light may benefit from a softer finish, like matte or eggshell, as too much sheen can create glare and make the space feel overly bright or harsh. In contrast, rooms with less natural light tend to work better with more reflective finishes, like satin or gloss, as these finishes will help bounce light around the room and make the space feel brighter and more open.

Choosing the right paint finish for your interior or exterior is more than just about aesthetics. It’s about balancing durability, light reflection, and the texture of each surface. Whether you’re working with trim, doors, brick, or sheetrock, understanding how different finishes perform will ensure that your space not only looks beautiful but stands the test of time.
