The Most Wonderful Time of the Day: Finding Peace by the Christmas Tree

There’s a quiet stillness in the early morning, a hush that lingers in the cool air, just before the world wakes up. The sky is still dark, save for the faint light beginning to creep over the horizon, and for a precious few moments, the only sound is maybe the soft crackle of a fire. In these early hours, there is magic in the simple act of being present, a feeling that feels especially sacred this time of year.

As I sit near my Christmas tree—its twinkling lights casting a soft glow against the cold winter morning—I am reminded of the beauty that exists in small moments. The ornaments that once felt like just decorations now carry with them memories. The stockings that hang by the fireplace aren’t just there for show, they’re symbols of our precious family. And in this final week before Christmas, when the season feels so very close, there is a peace that comes from slowing down.

I cradle a warm mug in my hands—for me, a  cup of tea, or maybe for you a cup of coffee—and I enjoy its warmth. In that moment, I can hear the soft whispers of God’s love, as if the stillness of the morning and the glow of the tree are a sacred invitation to slow down and listen. It’s the most wonderful time of the day, not because of the festivities or the hustle and bustle, but because of the space it creates for reflection, for prayer.

In this time, I reach for my Bible first, its pages rich with wisdom and comfort. This season makes the words even seem more meaningful, as I reflect on the beauty of the Christmas story, the promise of hope, and the incredible gift of God’s love. I read, I journal, I pray- moments of peace, joy, and preparation. There’s no rush, no pressure, just the pure beauty of a quiet morning and a heart ready to listen.

This week, especially,  there’s something that feels so precious. I remind myself that the tree and decorations won't be there for much longer. The season is fleeting, and with it comes the opportunity to savor these moments. It’s as if the tree itself is inviting me to pause, to sit, to savor the peace and anticipation of the season.

But it’s not just about savoring the lights or the decorations, though they’re lovely. It’s about preparing my heart for the day ahead. When the world outside will rush and bustle and ask for my attention, these precious morning moments help me center myself, to remember what truly matters. They remind me to start my day with intention—to bring a spirit of love and gratitude into every moment, every conversation, every task.

I think that’s one of the most special gifts of this season: the reminder that peace is always available to us, even in the busiest times, even in the midst of all the preparations. It’s in the quiet moments we steal for ourselves, in the time spent reflecting and praying, in the chance to slow down. It’s in the stillness of early mornings by the tree that we can find the strength to face the challenges of the day, the wisdom to navigate our thoughts, and the love to share with others.

As we near Christmas, let us remember to treasure these quiet moments, for they care well for our spirits. Whether it’s with a cup of something warm, a heart full of gratitude, or a prayer whispered into the stillness, these early hours are a gift. And as the lights on the tree flicker softly in the quiet morning, I am reminded that the most wonderful time of the day is not in the rush of the season, but in the calm moments of preparation, reflection, and joy.

So, as you sip your morning drink, breathe deeply, and let the stillness wrap itself around you, take a moment to soak in the peace of the season. The lights won’t be up much longer, and the holiday bustle will soon begin in earnest. But for now, we can savor the quiet, nurture our hearts, and prepare ourselves for the beauty of the day ahead. After all, this is the most wonderful time of the year—and the most wonderful time of the day.
